Brazilian Koa (Tigerwood)

Botanical Name:   Astronium, spp

Also Know As:   Goncalo Alves, Koa

Region(s) Grown :  Brazil, Peru, Guatemala, and Mexico

Available Products :  1 x 4 & 1 x 6 Decking

   ¾" x 2-1/4", 3" & 5" Flooring

Description:   As the name suggests, Tigerwood is brownish-orange in color with bold black stripes brushed through it.  The stripes or mineral streaks are random, ranging in size from narrow to literal "brush-strokes".  Like Brazilian Cherry, overtime the orange will darken, making the stripes less drastic, resulting in a more subtle contrast.

Janka Hardness :  2160 (170% harder than Red Oak)

Workability: Despite its high density, Tigerwood is relatively easily machined and installed.  Used widely as decking because of its resistance to moisture absorption and weathering.  Also used as indoor floor covering or paneling.  Nail down.

Durability:   Highly durable - resistant to rot, fungi, marring/dents, insects and fire.
