Bamboo is renewable, sustainable, workable, durable, affordable, flexible, strong and most importantly, beautiful. It has also played an important role in society for thousands of years. For instance, Thomas Edison used bamboo for the filament when inventing the light bulb, but even prior to that bamboo was used commonly as a building material in Asia.
Today, bamboo still plays an important role. In Hong Kong, webs of bamboo scaffolding are used to erect high-rise buildings. Workers trust its strength with the structural integrity of their building and also with their lives. However, the Asians are no longer alone realizing the benefits of using bamboo as a building material.
The uses and functions of bamboo are endless. Bamboo canes are being used to make outdoor furniture, fence rails, deck rails, and wall panels. It is also being engineered into flooring, plywood, paneling, and most recently, decking. Bamboo has taken its place in history through many means such as paper and musical instruments to again, the invention of the light bulb, but it has been taken to a new level. We are able to manufacture flooring and plywood out of this sustainable, quickly renewable, green building product.
We at Global Forest also appreciate the many benefits of bamboo and have been importing bamboo green and harvesting domestic bamboo poles for years. Green canes can be used for floral and decorative events and can be dried for building material or decorative pieces in the home, such as curtain rods. Our Tortoiseshell Bamboo (Phyllastachuys pybescens, Phyllostachys aurea) uses range from furniture kits, Tiki-bars and wall covering to walking sticks and picture frames.
Presently, rigorous scientific testing is being done to improve and expand the uses of Bamboo as a green building product. Developments internationally are recognizing bamboo’s potential in an enormous way. The great potential of this product is being explored daily and Global Forest has been involved in the movement since 1994.
Trees contain cellulose fibers, as does bamboo, but bamboo also contains silica, a large reason for bamboo’s hardness, density and strength.
Bamboo grows in two different plant forms, clumping and running. Both clumpers and runners grow as rhizomes. 99% of bamboo plants sold by Southeastern nursery’s today are evasive runners, and if not under the strictest of supervision, can get out of control very quickly. So, before you are entranced by the plant’s allure, do your homework about containing runners and ask for references of people who have planted runners in their yards. Ask about their experience before embarking into having bamboo plants in your yard or garden.
Clumpers are best for low maintenance. Global Forest offers only field-dug Golden Bamboo and Blue Henon plants and offered only in volume.
Bamboo is renewable, sustainable, workable, durable, affordable, flexible, strong and most importantly, beautiful.
One of the greatest traits of bamboo to Agro-Foresters is that it self regenerates without having to re-plant after a harvest. Within one year what you cut returns in height and diameter. However, it must grow in age for at least three to seven years to become strong enough for full Culm production into composite timber products, like flooring.
When compared to Red Oak and Teak, Bamboo lumber products, such as flooring, are found to be twice as stable. Density is measured in pounds per square inch. Bamboo lumber products rated as hard or as dense as Maple or Oak.
Composite bamboo building material is not only durable, but very beautiful as well. Traditionally, Bamboo flooring is blonde in color, similar to that of Maple. Now, with the ability to dye strand-woven bamboo, there are over thirty different flooring colors to choose from, including blue and green.
Global Forest, LLC has provided bamboo for people from all over the world for many different purposes. From making Tiki bars and fence post to wainscoting their walls with split poles from our warehouses. Even though we never think bamboo can or ever will replace the natural beauty of wood, it is a great product. Renewable like trees with many of the same properties and attributes of timber, bamboo is not a wood product, it is a grass, but it is as tough as timber.
We are pleased to offer this product in the form of building material, poles, flooring, panels, and green and dried canes.
